Win-rate calculator: win rate and expectancy

A high win rate alone says little. Only together with the size of your winners and losers does it become clear whether your approach holds up over time. This calculator shows you your win rate and expectancy per trade.

Enter the number of your winners and losers as well as your average win and average loss. The calculator shows you your win rate and your expectancy per trade, that is what you earn or lose on average per trade.

Why expectancy matters

Put the win rate in context

A low win rate is no problem as long as your winners are larger than your losers. Expectancy shows the full picture that the win rate alone leaves out.

Check your system honestly

A positive expectancy over many trades is what counts. The calculator helps you see whether your approach holds up statistically or only looked good for a short while.

Take the pressure off

Those who know that expectancy counts and not the single trade accept losses more easily as a normal part of the game and trade more calmly.

Discipline made visible

Win rate and expectancy can only be calculated honestly if you document your trades cleanly. That is exactly where FlowTrader supports you.

Common questions about win rate and expectancy

The win rate is the number of your winners divided by the total number of your trades, that is winners plus losers. With 55 winners and 45 losers, that comes to 55 percent. On its own, though, this number says nothing about your profitability.

Expectancy is what you earn or lose on average per trade. It is the win rate times the average win minus the loss rate times the average loss. A positive expectancy means your approach is in the black across many trades.

Not on its own. What matters is the interplay between win rate and the size of your winners and losers. With large winners you can be profitable even with a win rate below 50 percent, while a high win rate with winners that are too small can still end up in the red.
